Lisa Whelchel

At a very young age, Whelchel had become a devout Christian which would prove to be, at one point, complicated for writers and producers of the hit sitcom series.Career

Whelchel received her start in 1977, as a Mouseketeer on The New Mickey Mouse Club.  The show ran in syndication from 1977-1978.

Whelchel began her stint on the NBC sitcom, The Facts of Life, on August 24, 1979. During the show’s run, Whelchel refused a storyline which involved her character to be the first among the four young women on the show to lose her virginity.

Since becoming a Christian at the age of 10, Whelchel refused The Facts of Life story line because of her religious convictions.  The storyline was rewritten for the character of “Natalie.”  Whelchel even refused to appear in the episode.

During her time on The Facts of Life, she was offered a role in the music video, “Meltdown (at Madame Tussaud’s),” for Steve Taylor, who was a Christina singer/songwriter.  She also appeared in an episode of ABC’s The Love Boat in 1983.

Though she was offered small roles, Whelchel’s acting career ceased at the end of The Facts of Life era.

In 1984, she released a Christian pop album titled All Because of You. While the album was a meek success (#17 on the Billboard Contemporary Christian charts) and received a Grammy nomination for Best Inspirational Album, Whelchel did not record a follow-up. Among the songs featured on the album were “Good Girl,” “Just Obey,” and “Cover Me Lord.”

Life after The Facts of Life

Whelchel was reunited with Charlotte Rae to perform The Facts of Life theme song during the 2nd annual TV Land Awards ceremony, at the Hollywood Palladium in Hollywood, California on March 7, 2004.

In 2006, along with two of her Facts of Life cast members, she appeared on The Today Show to promote the show’s first and second seasons on DVD.  Former cast mate Kim Fields was unable to make the taping which Whelchel admitted being “bummed out” that Fields was unable to attend.

Whelchel would seize upon her chance to reunite with Fields on February 1, 2007, when the two met up on WFAA-TV’s Good Morning Texas. Fields was in Dallas to promote her appearance in the production Issues: We’ve All Got ‘Em’.  Whelchel was presented as a surprise guest.

On April 10, 2011, Whelchel and the cast of The Facts of Life: Charlotte Rae, Nancy McKeon, Mindy Cohn, Kim Fields, Geri Jewell and Cloris Leachman, were honored with the Pop Culture Award at the 9th Annual TV Land Awards in New York City, at the Javits Center.

Whelchel has devoted her life to her Christian faith. She has written books which provide guidance on various subject matters which, in Whelchel’s beliefs, are in line with the teachings of the Holy Bible.

The Christian-based topics include:  motherhood and raising children. Based on her faith, Whelchel is an avid believer in homeschooling. Because of her beliefs, Whelchel has been criticized by Christian and non-Christian parenting groups.

In 2007, Mary-Alice Cross, president of the Christian Parenting Association of America (CPAA), advised parents not to purchase Whelchel’s books or carry out any of her methods based on the organizations convictions that they are emotionally and physically abusive.

In 2000, she founded Momtime Ministries, a religious network of mothers’ groups who meet weekly to “equip and refresh and encourage” each other.

Whelchel has been seen touring with the Women of Faith group.
